About Melanie Powell, MSW, LCSW
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in North Carolina. My Masters of Social Work was obtained from the Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. I have over 10 years experience working with children and adolescents, as well as adults and geriatric populations, through the use of individual, group, and family sessions. My professional experiences are in the fields of school-based social work, and general mental health in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I also have over 5 years of experience working with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. I have extensive experience working with child survivors and witnesses to horrific acts of violence. I have been able to effect change on the macro scale by engaging legislators and getting bills passed that increased penalties for perpetrators of abuse. I have been a victims advocate on the legal level by writing restraining orders, providing testimony as an expert witness in court cases, and educating judges as well, as the community, on the dynamics of power and control that aid perpetrators in oppressing their victims.
I primarily utilize Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Eclectic, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Crisis Intervention, and Interpersonal Therapy. I have been a social worker my entire life; I just didn’t always know that was what it was called. I am passionate about aiding patients in reaching their goals in an empathetic and non-judgmental manner. It is an honor to serve people who have been made to “stay strong” for far too long, and who are ready to entrust their concerns with me, open their hearts toward happiness, and find that well-deserved release.
My goal is to reduce the effects of trauma and instill hope in victims of violence and assault.
