The season of giving has arrived! Is anyone on your holiday gift list going through a hard time right now? Not sure what to get them to show them that you care about them?
You can show your support by giving an intentional gift, one that can support their mental health and well being. There are different types of gifts, material gifts, acts of service, gifts of quality time, and many more!
Here are a few ideas:
This category of gifts includes things you can wrap or ship to someone you care about:
- Weighted blanket: these are said to assist in calming, relaxation, and grounding.
- Coloring books/pencils: these are a currently popular coping skill to use as a distraction.
- Essential oils and/or diffuser: give the gift of aromatherapy.
- Books: there are so many self-help and/or inspirational books out there to fit everyone’s needs!
- Appreciation jar: buy one or make your own! Write down all the reasons you appreciate the person on strips on paper and put inside the jar.
- Long distance lamp: these lamps are designed for 2 or more and you can light up the other persons lamp by touching yours and letting them know you are thinking of them.
- Create a personalized photobook: this can include pictures of happy memories that would brighten their day.
Acts of Service
This category of gifts includes ways you can provide a service to someone to demonstrate that you care about them and support them:
- Cook them food: a warm home cooked meal is always a thoughtful treat! Meal delivery is also a great idea.
- Cleaning: want to support a new mom, the elderly, or someone with limitations? Cleaning and/or organizing can help their environment feel more safe and orderly.
- Lawn care: are you the type of person who loves to work outside? Providing lawn care to someone who is going through a rough time is a great way to lift a burden.
- Babysitting: offering to babysit so a mom, dad, or other caregiver can give them some guilt-free time away.
- Errands: offering to run errands can help someone who is especially busy or burdened. For example, groceries, car maintenance, prescription pick-up, etc.
- Coupon book: you can make a coupon book filled with the above acts of service (and more!) for the person to use when it is most needed for them.
Gifts of Time:
This category of gifts includes ways to spend quality time with someone who might benefit from some extra attention this season:
- Share a meal together: this is arguably the most traditional way to connect. Eating alone can feel lonely for some people, so this is a great way to connect.
- Cook a meal or bake together: this can be such a great activity to participate in together with a delicious result!
- Commit to a weekly/monthly video chat: if you can’t see someone in person often, catching up through technology is a great way to connect and offer support.
- Commit to a weekly/monthly walk: if you are able to see someone in person, committing to getting outside and getting some exercise together can be beneficial for both of you!
- Teach them a skill: do you have a specific skill that you can pass along? This can be something practical like changing the oil in your car, or something creative like calligraphy. You could even start a hobby that the two of you could share!
